So firstly, it's a question of do you
Speaker:know what works? Do you have a routine on
Speaker:the game plan call on Monday? There's a
Speaker:guy there who's who's been absolutely
Speaker:killing it. And one of the things is you
Speaker:just go, I've just got to get back to my
Speaker:routine. He's had his holiday, just going
Speaker:to smash out that routine. And, and when
Speaker:he does morning and evening routines,
Speaker:he's just at the top of his game and he's
Speaker:got things heading in the right direction
Speaker:and everything else takes care of itself.
Speaker:I'm Ian Hawkins and this is Sporty's
Speaker:He doesn't
Speaker:life. The purpose of sport, as I
Speaker:see it, is to see your vision become a
Speaker:reality, find your voice, create
Speaker:strong connections and learn to trust
Speaker:your body.
Speaker:Having a conversation with a mate at the
Speaker:weekend talking about the Sydney
Speaker:Derby and the A league and how.
Speaker:The Wanderers were leading, leading well,
Speaker:and then they went away from what was
Speaker:working. They tried to well, they
Speaker:seemed to be playing to defend
Speaker:their lead instead of playing to win and.
Speaker:What usually happens is that suddenly
Speaker:they're under the pump. Sydney scored two
Speaker:late goals and.
Speaker:To draw in one of the greatest.
Speaker:Games of the year so far, really just the
Speaker:the drama and the action. And what is a
Speaker:Derby? Full house.
Speaker:Yeah, very good, and
Speaker:it always makes me shake my head with as
Speaker:a. Football fan, but also
Speaker:someone who's been involved in soccer my
Speaker:whole life is just that. That's what's
Speaker:possible. Like big crowds, but we just
Speaker:still seem so far away because, you
Speaker:know, the other games of the weekend you
Speaker:might get 7000 and the atmosphere is not
Speaker:the same.
Speaker:Anyway, I got a bit off track then, but
Speaker:the like the point of the conversation
Speaker:was around just that.
Speaker:Not not sticking to a winning
Speaker:formula. And if you
Speaker:look at look at it from a sports
Speaker:perspective, it's like the teams that are
Speaker:consistently winning, they're
Speaker:ruthless and they have a plan and they
Speaker:stick to it and they continue to focus on
Speaker:that. They might have a few different
Speaker:gears and they might have a few different
Speaker:ways of playing, but they're absolutely,
Speaker:they know their style and they just
Speaker:continue to play that way
Speaker:until the end. And obviously. Towards the
Speaker:end of the game, there are some subtle
Speaker:things that you can do, but. You
Speaker:want consistency, you want truthfulness.
Speaker:You got to stick to your plan. You may
Speaker:not guarantee yourself success, but at
Speaker:least you can walk off knowing that
Speaker:you've given every chance. And now
Speaker:Tottenham are in a bit of a hole. They've
Speaker:got lots of injuries. But you hear Ange
Speaker:talk about it all the time. He's like, we
Speaker:don't play the scoreboard, we play. This
Speaker:is how we play. And
Speaker:just after that conversation,
Speaker:the. The weekend's game, it
Speaker:got me thinking how often we do that.
Speaker:In our life to where?
Speaker:Things might be going well and we stopped
Speaker:doing the things that got us there.
Speaker:Often when I'm someone on coach
Speaker:previously comes back for some more
Speaker:coaching, it's usually that's the reason
Speaker:why is that they've stopped doing the
Speaker:things that got them to success and they
Speaker:need some accountability, maybe a bit of
Speaker:a kick up the ass and they need a boost
Speaker:to make sure they're getting back to
Speaker:doing those things. So
Speaker:firstly, it's a question of do you know
Speaker:what works? Do you have a routine on the
Speaker:game plan call on Monday? There's a guy
Speaker:there who's who's been absolutely killing
Speaker:it. And one of the things is you just go,
Speaker:I've just got to get back to my routine.
Speaker:He's had his holiday, just going to smash
Speaker:out that routine. And, and when he does
Speaker:morning and evening routines, he's just
Speaker:at the top of his game and he's got
Speaker:things heading in the right direction and
Speaker:everything else takes care of itself. He
Speaker:doesn't go away from those. He also.
Speaker:One of the tasks to get people to do is a
Speaker:commitment to themselves, and he took a
Speaker:fair bit of time, effort and pride in
Speaker:making sure his commitment to himself was
Speaker:right on. And he reads it every day. They
Speaker:haven't had a client do that. And he's
Speaker:getting results. So there's something to
Speaker:that, right? Some people do bits and
Speaker:pieces and some people that's fine
Speaker:because you don't. Sometimes you don't
Speaker:need everything. I'm not saying everyone
Speaker:needs to have that, but. He's
Speaker:consistent with it. How he knows what
Speaker:works for him. Having that commitment
Speaker:works for him. Having those routines
Speaker:works for him, and he makes sure he does
Speaker:it. So do you know what
Speaker:works? Are you consistent, and do you
Speaker:have a process in place to make sure you
Speaker:can stick to the things that work and
Speaker:continue to move forward so that you can
Speaker:continue to improve? At the very least,
Speaker:stay at the line, not find
Speaker:yourself drifting back into those holes.
Speaker:Because sometimes when you hit those
Speaker:holes, it can be a quick fall
Speaker:and then it can be a long slow grind to
Speaker:get back to where you were. But if you
Speaker:are not looking at.
Speaker:Like prevention, like what
Speaker:or, or papering over the cracks
Speaker:when things go wrong or just putting a
Speaker:few things in place and you're going to
Speaker:have relapses. But if you are looking at
Speaker:how do I continue to extend myself and
Speaker:improve and make sure I stick to the
Speaker:things that I know work and how can I add
Speaker:more of the things that maybe I haven't
Speaker:learned yet, they can extend myself.
Speaker:Well, then you're going to be like the
Speaker:Wanderers on Saturday night. You're going
Speaker:to keep having those. Light flourishes
Speaker:from life that kick you
Speaker:down. And even if it come
Speaker:back to parity, it's going to feel like a
Speaker:loss because you had the game,
Speaker:you had life just where you wanted it.
Speaker:Gotta know your plan and you gotta stick
Speaker:to it. You gotta have that
Speaker:consistency. So
Speaker:I've been banging on about it this week.
Speaker:Know your plan and I won't leave all the
Speaker:I won't bore you with more details about
Speaker:the planning session, but it is tomorrow.
Speaker:If you're watching this on Wednesday,
Speaker:there will be an opportunity to get the
Speaker:recording. Really small investment.
Speaker:Or do it yourself. But you need to have a
Speaker:plan, and you need to know what works,
Speaker:and you need to be consistent with it.
Speaker:And if you're coaching your team, it's
Speaker:the same. Don't chop and change. Don't.
Speaker:Don't.
Speaker:Sacrifice your values and your
Speaker:beliefs because of what other think
Speaker:people might be saying or doing. I
Speaker:remember the first year I coached at a
Speaker:high level in football.
Speaker:Full 30 something man squad.
Speaker:I didn't have enough conviction in in
Speaker:what I how I wanted to play and what I
Speaker:wanted to do. And I took advice from all
Speaker:these different people and I didn't trust
Speaker:my instincts and judgement. And then
Speaker:later in the year when I'm like, oh, I
Speaker:need to do this. I acted and it was too
Speaker:late. I'm already in a massive hole.
Speaker:Thankfully we didn't get relegated, but
Speaker:we weren't close. And it was
Speaker:because I wasn't clear. And then
Speaker:once I did get a bit clear, I didn't have
Speaker:the conviction to to.
Speaker:Trust myself and follow through with the
Speaker:action. Again, it's an importance of
Speaker:having good mentors, listening to them.
Speaker:Getting good advice and then also knowing
Speaker:what it is that you want and being
Speaker:definitive about that. And I
Speaker:love as well I talk about this
Speaker:podcast is how the transferable skills
Speaker:and moments and learnings
Speaker:across sport and life. Just
Speaker:love that. I'll send it to my coach,
Speaker:like sometimes you just need to give me a
Speaker:Rev up like it's half time because I love
Speaker:that. I love having someone to say to me,
Speaker:you haven't got this done, what's going
Speaker:on? You said you were going to do this.
Speaker:Here's what we talked about the process.
Speaker:Go back and see the process. Are you
Speaker:doing the training? Are you doing the
Speaker:practise? Are you doing those things?
Speaker:And to me, that's just a great.
Speaker:Recipe for success?
Speaker:The Paul Ruiz book, which was a big
Speaker:inspiration for me. Paul
Speaker:and Tammy Ruiz book was a big inspiration
Speaker:for me and so many levels. You know, he
Speaker:talked about living like an athlete and
Speaker:and.
Speaker:I've learnt over the years just how
Speaker:profound that statement was and just how
Speaker:many of those lessons are so true that
Speaker:actually they're they're even more true
Speaker:and there's so many more levels to it
Speaker:than I thought.
Speaker:So if you know that you've had that
Speaker:success in sport or just that you enjoy
Speaker:that, you know you're going to get the
Speaker:best out of yourself and start applying
Speaker:more of those skills into your day to day
Speaker:life and you're going to see things
Speaker:transfer, transform before your
Speaker:eyes, especially if you keep it a journal
Speaker:and you're keeping track of it. I wanted
Speaker:to include this quote from one of the
Speaker:people from the game plan training this
Speaker:week. Journaling supercharges
Speaker:everything. That's what they'd
Speaker:experienced from that, from the
Speaker:journaling process. Since I started my
Speaker:hair, but making sure they were
Speaker:practising gratitude. Their
Speaker:wins and then just journaling about what
Speaker:they're creating and what they want to
Speaker:create. It's just getting that,
Speaker:those ideas and those thoughts out of
Speaker:their head and putting it into
Speaker:written word, which makes it truth, which
Speaker:taps into your subconscious, which helps
Speaker:you go out and get it. It helps with that
Speaker:consistency, helps you stick to your
Speaker:routines and stick to your plans and make
Speaker:it happen. Go make it happen.
Speaker:You've taken the time to listen to this
Speaker:whole episode. Now it's time to take
Speaker:action. Commit to one thing you've
Speaker:learned today and make it happen. And to
