Episode Summary:

In this episode of Sport Is Life, Ian Hawkins challenges the “hustle and grind” mentality, sharing why real transformation comes not from chasing results but from growing into the person you need to be to achieve your vision. Inspired by a coaching session with a business client, Ian explores how limiting beliefs can cap our potential and how rewiring them opens up space to dream again.

Through a vivid “garden” analogy, Ian unpacks how to create the right environment for growth, success, and flow: planting empowering beliefs, nurturing yourself with light and fuel, removing weeds that stifle progress, and surrounding yourself with the right people. He also explains the science behind the brain’s Reticular Activating System and the magic-like synchronicity that happens when you get crystal clear on your goals.

Whether you’re an athlete, leader, or high performer, this episode offers practical and inspiring steps to stop chasing and start attracting the opportunities, people, and resources you need to flourish.

Speaker:

We all want results, but too often we

Speaker:

get caught in the chase. We grind,

Speaker:

we hustle, we chase the next win.

Speaker:

But what if the real shift comes when you

Speaker:

stop chasing and start growing? In

Speaker:

this episode, I'm sharing or having a

Speaker:

vision isn't just about achieving some

Speaker:

perfect goal. It's about

Speaker:

who you need to become to get there.

Speaker:

I'll unpack how to create the right

Speaker:

environment for growth, success and

Speaker:

flow, and why, just like a garden, your

Speaker:

mindset and surroundings need to be

Speaker:

planted, fed, nurtured,

Speaker:

and of course, weeded. Let's get into it.

Speaker:

I'm Ian Hawkins and this is Sporty's

Speaker:

life. The purpose of sport, as I

Speaker:

see it, is to see your vision become a

Speaker:

reality, find your voice, create

Speaker:

strong connections and learn to trust

Speaker:

your body.

Speaker:

Just finished up with one of my business

Speaker:

clients. I've got to get in the habit of

Speaker:

recording these straight off the back of

Speaker:

these. Sessions because this is

Speaker:

where the ideas are freshers in my mind.

Speaker:

There's always something in those

Speaker:

conversations that.

Speaker:

Have an element of goal that are going to

Speaker:

be beneficial to you guys so I want to

Speaker:

make sure I capture that as many times as

Speaker:

possible and what we're talking about is

Speaker:

is that he's now.

Speaker:

We cleared some. Some blocks he

Speaker:

had around his.

Speaker:

Future he realised he hada ceiling

Speaker:

to the results he was able to achieve and

Speaker:

he wanted to break that ceiling. He he's

Speaker:

done a bit of work on himself already, so

Speaker:

he had a bit of self awareness around

Speaker:

this and he actually mentioned a moment

Speaker:

in his life, something his brother had

Speaker:

said to him that had anchored in a belief

Speaker:

about what he thought he was capable of.

Speaker:

It's amazing the power of. People's words

Speaker:

when we're young and the formative age

Speaker:

and. And this

Speaker:

statement had sort of plagued him to a

Speaker:

certain degree. He knew it was holding

Speaker:

him back, but he couldn't break it. So so

Speaker:

we did that. We, we went through a

Speaker:

process to rewire that belief, to

Speaker:

actually remove it and create a whole new

Speaker:

belief. And so suddenly he's like, OK,

Speaker:

well, we'll need to like, get back to

Speaker:

that vision. Like what? What is it that I

Speaker:

do want? He kind of stopped dreaming.

Speaker:

That belief had stopped him from having

Speaker:

that full, unrestricted dream of what his

Speaker:

future looked like. And so we we

Speaker:

started him. On that process of

Speaker:

forming his life game plan

Speaker:

and I was describing to him

Speaker:

how it works and I used a story

Speaker:

that my coach back in

Speaker:

2013 shared with me the.

Speaker:

The future vision that you create. Your

Speaker:

game plan. Is not

Speaker:

because you have to

Speaker:

achieve that particular.

Speaker:

Goal or or. Future

Speaker:

vision, but it's because of the person

Speaker:

that you need to become to work towards

Speaker:

that. And then we talked about how.

Speaker:

When you get really clear on on what it

Speaker:

is you want. Knowing that.

Speaker:

Flagpole may move knowing that you know

Speaker:

you're working towards it, but you're

Speaker:

going to grow and change, and maybe what

Speaker:

you thought you wanted might change.

Speaker:

That. Once you get that

Speaker:

clear vision, then things start to find

Speaker:

their way to you. Your brain is

Speaker:

incredible at filtering out unnecessary

Speaker:

information, but you have to give it

Speaker:

clear parameters of what you want. And

Speaker:

that part of your brain, the RIS

Speaker:

reticular activating system, will find

Speaker:

what it is you want. And I've for

Speaker:

me, like if there's a certain car you

Speaker:

want to drive, suddenly you see them

Speaker:

everywhere. Does everyone else see that

Speaker:

car?As are they on the road?

Speaker:

Absolutely. But because you've got clear,

Speaker:

you've given your brain clear directions,

Speaker:

it's always looking for it. And he

Speaker:

understood it. He talked about, you know,

Speaker:

the, the, the spotter, the yellow car.

Speaker:

Suddenly you see yellow cars everywhere.

Speaker:

Excuse me. And

Speaker:

so creating that vision, but then we also

Speaker:

talked about how. Once you do

Speaker:

that, then. Whether you look

Speaker:

come at it from a scientific perspective,

Speaker:

which is because the brain is then

Speaker:

focused on what it is, or whether you

Speaker:

have a more spiritual belief in

Speaker:

like things showing up, law of

Speaker:

attraction, whatever it is like, is there

Speaker:

any different way that you want to frame

Speaker:

it? It's all the same thing. The clearer

Speaker:

you are in your mind of what you want,

Speaker:

the easier those things will find their

Speaker:

way to you. It's it's

Speaker:

not overcomplicating and I love how Steve

Speaker:

Jobs described it. In that that

Speaker:

famous speech he did, I think it was

Speaker:

Stanford University and he said at some

Speaker:

point you have to put your faith in

Speaker:

something. Whether you call it life,

Speaker:

whether you call it karma, whether you

Speaker:

call it God, whether you call it.

Speaker:

Attraction. He used other words I can't

Speaker:

remember, but whatever it is, you need to

Speaker:

put your faith in something. Knowing that

Speaker:

life will work itself out. And it's the

Speaker:

same thing for you. You have that vision,

Speaker:

you put your faith and then things will

Speaker:

show up. But you have to have that faith.

Speaker:

We have to have the vision and then the

Speaker:

faith. And then. And I told him this

Speaker:

story. That my coach told to

Speaker:

me. He said that there were these British

Speaker:

scientists. They studied butterflies.

Speaker:

What do you call a scientist that studies

Speaker:

butterflies? I couldn't tell you, but

Speaker:

they. Plan this trip to

Speaker:

South America to find this rare butterfly

Speaker:

that hadn't been seen in however long

Speaker:

they wanted to find it. And so they went.

Speaker:

They planned, did all of this extensive

Speaker:

planning. They went there. They spent

Speaker:

months and months, maybe even years, I

Speaker:

can't remember exactly the the whole

Speaker:

story. It was 12 years ago. But they

Speaker:

never found it. The funding got removed

Speaker:

and they had to go back. But they didn't

Speaker:

want to give up, so they tried a

Speaker:

different tact. They they'd heard there's

Speaker:

other ways to do it. So what they did

Speaker:

instead was build a garden in the UK,

Speaker:

using all of the native plants to that

Speaker:

particular area where this butterfly is

Speaker:

known to live. And what do you reckon

Speaker:

happened? These butterflies started

Speaker:

turning up. Now the logic part

Speaker:

of your brain goes, well, how is that

Speaker:

possible? How do they fly across?

Speaker:

The world will.

Speaker:

The reality is there's so many different

Speaker:

ways for that to happen. I don't know if

Speaker:

butterflies can fly across things, but I

Speaker:

also know that butterflies and eggs can

Speaker:

get laid in a whole lot of different

Speaker:

places where things come

Speaker:

across other parts of the world.

Speaker:

Australia has a quite.

Speaker:

Strict quarantine and.

Speaker:

And rules around customs and yet the the

Speaker:

beetle that kills the that gets

Speaker:

into beehives still got through and

Speaker:

and a lot of beehives have been destroyed

Speaker:

here in Australia in the last five years.

Speaker:

It can happen, right? So the same thing.

Speaker:

And actually it's not the point of the

Speaker:

story. The point is, is that we don't go.

Speaker:

Like trying to chase something

Speaker:

necessarily, but if we create the right

Speaker:

environment, if we create

Speaker:

our best possible garden.

Speaker:

We're crystal clear on the goal. We

Speaker:

continue to build the garden that will

Speaker:

attract the things that we need. So that

Speaker:

might mean you need to plant

Speaker:

certain things in your world.

Speaker:

Maybe it's beliefs, maybe it's the people

Speaker:

you surround you with. You're going to

Speaker:

need fuel. Sunlight, so

Speaker:

you need more light in your life, things

Speaker:

that are going to light you up. You

Speaker:

need to weed the garden. You need to get

Speaker:

rid of those things that that overgrow

Speaker:

the good parts, the things that grow fast

Speaker:

and aren't helpful need to remove those

Speaker:

water. Water is like flow, right?

Speaker:

So bringing more of that flow, more of

Speaker:

that place where you are you're most

Speaker:

effective. Because when you do all of

Speaker:

these things and you become that person

Speaker:

that you need to be for that goal, that

Speaker:

it's amazing what will show up for you,

Speaker:

what will be attracted to your garden.

Speaker:

It's like magic. And if you've ever had

Speaker:

that experience of synchronicity where

Speaker:

where just something happens where you're

Speaker:

like, wow. That just blows me away.

Speaker:

Opportunity falls in your lap.

Speaker:

Those things happen off the back of

Speaker:

having clarity on what it is you're

Speaker:

working towards. Now, if up until this

Speaker:

point in your life, you've had vague idea

Speaker:

of where you're heading and what that

Speaker:

future vision is, We've had vague

Speaker:

results, but you've got an idea of what

Speaker:

it is. So you still have had results and

Speaker:

you've still had opportunities find you.

Speaker:

Imagine what would show up for you if you

Speaker:

had that clear vision, if you created an

Speaker:

environment where those. 70s but I only

Speaker:

found you. But you were ready to actually

Speaker:

accept them. You had all of the resources

Speaker:

in place to be able to then do something

Speaker:

with them. Imagine what your life could

Speaker:

look like.

Speaker:

So it's not about chasing. It's not about

Speaker:

working harder. And this is a

Speaker:

cliche, but it's true. You need to work

Speaker:

smarter. You need to have the right

Speaker:

things in place. And then,

Speaker:

importantly, you've got to take action.

Speaker:

So where do you need to start? Do you

Speaker:

need that future vision?Have you already

Speaker:

got the vision clear and you need to

Speaker:

start planting in your garden? Is there

Speaker:

weeds in the garden that need to be

Speaker:

removed? Are there people hanging out in

Speaker:

your garden that don't need to be there

Speaker:

because of the damage that they do?Maybe

Speaker:

you need to bring in some more people

Speaker:

that will help you with your garden, help

Speaker:

it to flourish.

Speaker:

Whatever it is, start somewhere. Take

Speaker:

action. And just watch.

Speaker:

Watch with amazement.

Speaker:

About what you'll see, what you'll find,

Speaker:

and the opportunities that will find you.

Speaker:

As always, share your experience.

Speaker:

Where have you had that moment of

Speaker:

synchronicity? Something showing up that

Speaker:

just blew your mind? So

Speaker:

many because some of them, it's almost

Speaker:

like magic, right?Well, again, it's not

Speaker:

magic, It's it's science, but it's

Speaker:

also an element of that feels like magic.

Speaker:

There's there's a you get into quantum

Speaker:

physics and the way that things are

Speaker:

attracted like attracts like you've

Speaker:

experienced it. That's

Speaker:

amazing. So please

Speaker:

do share your stories. And

Speaker:

always sharing.

Speaker:

Share this with anyone that you know

Speaker:

would, would appreciate it that needs to

Speaker:

hear this at this time. And

Speaker:

yeah, I'll be very much appreciative of

Speaker:

that. See you next time.

Speaker:

You've taken the time to listen to this

Speaker:

whole episode. Now it's time to take

Speaker:

action. Commit to one thing you've

Speaker:

learned today and make it happen. And to
