Episode Summary:

What if the real edge in elite sport isn’t talent; but how well do you manage pressure, identity, and long-term health? In this powerful conversation, Ian Hawkins sits down with Jason Chan, Chief Medical Officer of the Melbourne Storm, to explore the unseen layers of high performance. From fractured sternums played through in silence to Jerome Hughes’ rapid grand final comeback, Dr Chan shares raw insights into the physical and psychological demands placed on elite athletes; and why society often misunderstands the very traits that make them great

Beyond rugby league, the conversation shifts to longevity, stress, sleep, peptides, epigenetic age, and why modern medicine often waits for illness instead of measuring wellness. Dr Chan outlines his PK27 performance model; a data-driven, preventative approach to health that blends elite sport standards with everyday life. This episode challenges listeners to rethink how they invest in their bodies, manage stress, and take ownership of their long-term performance; not just to live longer, but to live stronger.

About the Guest:

Dr. Jason Chan

Director of medical services

Renowned for his three-decade career at the intersection of elite sport and medicine, Dr. Jason Chan has spent over 30 years guiding athletes and executives toward peak performance and longevity.

A graduate of the University of Melbourne, Dr Chan served as the Chief Medical Officer for the Melbourne Storm Rugby League Club, a role he’s held for more than a decade, helping shape one of Australia’s most successful professional sporting organisations.

Beyond the NRL, his medical footprint spans the Queensland State of Origin, Super Rugby’s Melbourne Rebels, Sunshine Lightning Netball, AFL/VFL, and international soccer.

Clinically, Dr Chan’s focus beyond the usual sports injuries includes concussion management, regenerative (PRP/BPC-157) therapies, and non-surgical osteoarthritis management. His philosophy is simple: deliver the same precision, insight, and outcomes used for elite athletes to every patient.

He’s also the founder of the Surgical Assistants Group of Victoria, supplying surgical assistants to Surgeons throughout the state.

Now, Dr Chan is spearheading a new frontier in performance and preventive medicine through PK27.com.au — a data-driven, precision-health program that fuses diagnostics, metabolic science, genetics, and peptide therapy to help high-performing individuals live longer, stronger, and sharper. PK27 brings the tools of elite sport into the executive and longevity space, turning medical insight into measurable performance.

When not on the sidelines or in surgery, he’s a father of five, grandfather of three, former Australian U18 doubles Badminton Champion, and a lifelong Essendon tragic, proof that some passions never retire.
